Fresh off the knitting needles is my take on the classic twinset — a new twist on the nautical look that is super popular this season.
The sleeveless shell is a mix of stripes — wide and narrow — that plays on the traditional mariniere look. The cardigan is a solid navy blue but with cream buttons that link back to the cream stripes on the shell.
The Pringle Twinset by Woolfolk
The Pringle Twinset pattern was launched in early May by Woolfolk. Unlike the traditional twinset, which was designed to be fitted, this version has a bit of a relaxed fit in the body and sleeves. Classic details are included, such as a fine gauge knit, rounded crew neckline, buttons, and banded hems.
I used Woolfolk Tynd yarn for this project, which is a fingering weight merino wool yarn. It is a lovely yarn to knit with, as it is soft with a tight twist. The resulting fabric — even after hand washing — has a wonderful drape and feel, like cashmere!
A Classic Twinset That can be Customized
Because the pattern is so classic, it can be easily customized. The sleeves can be shortened to elbow-length, bracelet-length, or even converted into cap sleeves. The ribbed hems can be made deeper. Embroidery or beading can be added around the neckline. The shell can be cropped, which would be a really cute look with the cardigan + jeans. Maybe a little pocket can be added. So many options!
The main change I made was to add the stripes to the shell. A traditional Pringle twinset matches the shell with the cardigan. Another change I made was to forego buttonholes in favor of either wearing it open (and using the buttons as decoration only) or adding snaps as a closure.
