A New DVF Wrap Dress in an Edgy Floral Print

The DVF Wrap Dress is truly a classic. I just completed a version in a beautiful fuchsia and gray viscose knit fabric and love the result!

The Details

For this version, I used a stretchy knit fabric as the dress is cut and fit to hug the body in the bodice. This fabric is a synthetic blend made of viscose, polyester, and elastane, which makes this an easy care, throw-in-the-washing-machine kind of dress. I love the print and colors — an edgy take on floral in a cool mix of fuchsia, gray, and blue. This fabric has a nice weight to it, which allows the dress to hang nicely and have some movement and swing.

The dress has ties that wrap around the body to secure the fit. The bodice is shaped with darts and the neckline is stabilized to ensure minimal gaping and a good fit. The skirt is fitted at the waist and then flares out to a deep hem, which gives it enough weight to swing when walking or twirling! The shape is so flattering to all body shapes. I chose to make a knee-length dress but it can be made as a maxi dress or a mini dress. I think a maxi dress in black would be so fabulous!

The collar and cuffs give it a more tailored look. The french cuffs feature metal buttons with a floral pattern, but bolder buttons would definitely make a statement. Other variations could be no collar or a smaller collar; short sleeves or sleeveless; no cuffs; or elastic cuffs.

The Fit

In terms of fit, wrap styles are generally pretty forgiving, especially in knit fabrics, so tweaking the fit may not seem as critical. However, I found that, even though the fit is ok, it would have been perfect if I had made a few adjustments. I am petite (height: 5 feet 1 inch) so I usually adjust the shoulder width and bodice length, as well as sleeve and hem length. If I had made the shoulder and bodice adjustments, I think it would have been perfect. Lesson learned — always check for fit, even with knits and a forgiving style!
