Hinamatsuri doll display card for March 3

What New Things I’m Excited About in March

March in the Bay Area kicked off with thunder, lightning, and rainy days, but I guess that’s to be expected as Winter departs and Spring emerges. Here are some random things I’m excited about this month!

Hinamatsuri or Girl’s Day on March 3

The month starts with Hinamatsuri or Girl’s Day in Japan, which is an annual festival on March 3 held to pray for the health and happiness of girls. Traditional dolls called hina ningyo are typically displayed on a tiered platform and foods such as chirashi sushi (vinegared sushi rice topped with raw fish and vegetables) and sakura mochi (image below; sweet rice filled with sweet red bean paste) are served. I don’t have a set of hina ningyo to display (they are often passed down in families as heirlooms) but a friend sent me a card version!

Watch Season 13 of Vera

I am ecstatic that Season 13 of Vera is here! Episode 1 aired on Britbox on February 28 and two new episodes will drop in March. I’ve watched every episode of this British crime drama to date and have read all of the books by Ann Cleeves upon which the tv series is based. Can you tell I’m a fan?

The title character, Vera Stanhope, is a DCI (detective chief inspector) in beautiful Northumberland (northern region of England). She is quirky, crusty, and a bit disheveled, but sharp and navigates the twists and turns of each case to always solve the crime — with the help of her team, of course.

Discover New Yarns During the Bay Area Yarn Crawl

The first annual Bay Area Yarn Crawl will be from March 15 to March 24. About 21 local Bay Area yarn shops will be welcoming knitters and fiber enthusiasts with yarns, tools, patterns, and surprises for Crawlers. What a great way to discover new yarn shops and support our local businesses!

A lot of the shops will be hosting trunk shows, meet-and-greets, and other events, so check out the current schedule! It is a great way to see knitted garments, meet designers, learn about new yarns, etc.

Something special: A Verb for Keeping Warm is offering a special yarn crawl bundle of yarns dyed in an exclusive colorway that celebrates the Bay Area!

Shop and Feast at TreasureFest on Treasure Island

TreasureFest is a monthly craft/vintage/music/food event held on the last weekend of every month on Treasure Island. I think it used to be more of a large flea market but it seems to have evolved into a combination event that includes local artisans as well. What a great way to support local artisans! Live music, food trucks, and more than 300+ vendors — if the weather is good, it should be a fun event!

The next TreasureFest will be on March 30 and March 31 from 11 am to 5 pm! From reading reviews, it sounds like driving/parking might be tough because it is such a popular event, so maybe taking the ferry from downtown San Francisco might be the better (and more scenic) option!

Learn About Women’s History Month in the US

March is Women’s History Month and it recognizes and celebrates the contributions women have made throughout US history. What began as a local weeklong event in Santa Rosa, California in 1978 grew to become a national monthlong celebration in 1987. Since then, a new theme has been selected every year. This year, the theme is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.”
